Here is a plan that should get implemented. This was emailed to me. The writer is unknown. It is appearing all over the internet. Someone should turn this into real legislation, that would give me some Hope and Change I could believe in!
Congressional Reform Act of 2010 Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work. All funds in the Congressional retirement fund moves to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, Congress participates with the American people. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, server your term(s), then go home and back to work. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work. 5. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%. 6. Congress looses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.
Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.
7. Congress must equally abide in all laws they impose on the American people.
8. All contracts with past and present congressmen are void effective 1/1/11.
The American people did not make this contract with congressmen, congressmen made all these contracts for themselves.
Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.

Thanks for sharing this. I think I’ll include in on my site also. I did a 9 part series on the Constitution and have written about how Congress was supposed to meet at least once a year. They can meet more often, but I don’t believe the founders intended for them to meet every day (and all night too).
Dido, Amen!!! How do we get it done?
All candidates for office should take an oath to sign this legislation if they are elected.
Let’s guess who would vote this in? Congress? Ain’t gonna happen.
Now leave it up to the people and I think we have a real chance to make our leaders live up to the same standards they expect of the people they represent. I know I for one would vote for this.
The term limit is too long. Cut Congress back to 4 years total.
I’m hoping 2010 replaces every damn one of them. We need a a voter revolution.
I agree but I think we should take it a step further and call for all the Senators and representatives to step down and not run for reelection. This should be done if they have been in office for more then two terms. I think its time for a real change and I think that’s the best way to try and reform our Country.
I don’t think our elected officials should be able to serve longer than our President. Elections should be on alternate years for the President, Senate and Congress. This should be the norm for ALL elected officials, down to local governments. I would vote on this measure TODAY.
There are presently 10 states with the “initiative ” process where ordinary people can put things to the ballot. Unfortunately, in California, they usually get turned over by the most liberal court in the land, the 9th circuit court. Has anyone begun this process in their state?
I agree with the Congressional Reform Act. Now we need to have it implemented and the Supreme Court keep it instead of throwing it out.
How can we get this enacted? There are many in agreement – but there is no link where we can go sign a petition or learn how to get personally involved in helping make this a reality. Such a great idea – but we need to put legs to this. Is any org out there trying to become a focal point for this, a place to connect and help get the ball rolling? So badly needed…..
Please, keep me in the loop!
Thanks!
This is doable, all we need is the state legislatures of 2/3 of the states to do this. Considering how ticked off the electorate is at government this could be done but we need to strike while the iron is hot and people are ticked off. I would stand on the corner every weekend and collect signature for this.
Article V of the Constitution
The Congress, whenever two thirds of both houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose amendments to this Constitution, or, on the application of the legislatures of two thirds of the several states, shall call a convention for proposing amendments, which, in either case, shall be valid to all intents and purposes, as part of this Constitution, when ratified by the legislatures of three fourths of the several states, or by conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other mode of ratification may be proposed by the Congress; provided that no amendment which may be made prior to the year one thousand eight hundred and eight shall in any manner affect the first and fourth clauses in the ninth section of the first article; and that no state, without its consent, shall be deprived of its equal suffrage in the Senate.
I’M FOR IT 100%.
I am for it and I also would stand on streetcorners to collect petitions
Not going to happen. To much arrogance and ego for a politician to stand up for the people. The Ivory Tower has become unassailable. Incumbents be gone. Re-elect no-one
PS sorry I forgot. Term limits shouldn’t be required, that should be the responsibility of the voter. Who keeps re-electing these lifers? Special interests? Corporations? Lobbyists? Dumb people? YOU the voters are they way of change.
This couldn’t happen soon enough. It’s long overdue.
excuse me…. but …. just wondering…. have any of you heard of ELECTIONS. Yes, elections. These sentators and reps you all so love to hate must be voted into office. If you don’t want them, then vote to get them out. I believe there is an election every two years in various states. Go for it! Wonderful to see so many of you INVOLVED in politics instead of simply blogging.
I have voted in every election since I was 18. I vote and I am politically active plus I blog. Your comment however lacks context. What does voting or not voting have to do with establishing term limits and pay/benefit guidelines? You are not excused!
I love it! I am especially interested in making these people have a stake in their policies. A healthcare program is fine with them since they do not use it. Make them use it as we all do
The only way you will get this done is with “pitchforks” not signs!
I am not sure how far this can really go. Unfortunately the people that have to sign it into law are the same people who will not want to pass the legislation. But I think that we need to make our voices heard, sign the petition, vote in the elections and do not vote for any incumbents. I think that Congress’s arrogance has gotten the majority of the people in this country very upset. It is time for a change because the change you voted for in ’08 turned out to be the same old sh!#.
Another serious problem besides Congressional self-serving is the selling of legislature, regulation, and foriegn policy in hopes of campaign contributions and other emoluments that you see if you look up the Bipartisan “Reform” Act. Perhaps if Congressfolk and the President only were to serve one 8, 10, or 12 term without any option whatsoever of continuing in political office after that. Thus, once in office, there would be no reason for them to need campaign contributions any longer and no excuse for them to get any. The notion that people contribute to support the candidate that they like and not to suborn a political official would gain a little more credence in as much as donors would not be able to hold future payments over politicians’ heads. They like everyone else would just have to trust the politician.
It would be reasonable that the elected senators and representatives work out of their home districts and teleconference on a regular basis. Major corporations do the same and reduce travel expenses dramatically. Also these people will be closer to their families and constituents and more visible. On another vent, why is Obama allowed to use taxpayer money to jet to campaign for people in his party? He campaigned on reform and transparency and neither have been accomplished. Americans must unite and remove every democrat from office when their terms are up. The only way to stop Obama before 2012 is to take away his support in the legislative branch of the government.
I agree with all of the reform concepts except the term for the House. That term should move to staggered terms of four year, with a max of 3 terms. This eliminates half of the time of the House being spent on running for reelection starting right after the election.
This would ever past is if it was put on the ballot at election time and voted on by the voters, with no way to be changed by congress. No way is congress going to cut there own throats…
When’s the vote…..you’ve got mine!
There is only one solution, give them an offer they cannot refuse.
What about elections? If the voters had common sense, elections should eliminate those who have been around too long! Me thinks that most voters are just plain lazy and believe the crap that is dished out by the media as news! When the story becomes how much money the candidates have raised (as it is now), we are all in trouble!
