TX Gov. Perry gives Fed’s education program the boot!

U.S. Department of Education’s “Race to the Top” program, is a $5 billion competitive fund that awards grants to states to improve education quality. The program was created as part of the economic stimulus and is part of Democratic President Barack Obama’s efforts to overhaul the nation’s educational system.

“Texas won’t compete for up to $700 million in federal stimulus money for education because the program “smacks of a federal takeover of our public schools,” Republican Gov. Rick Perry said Wednesday.

Gov. Perry, Texas Education Commissioner Robert Scott and representatives of teachers’ unions said taking the money would “force the state to adopt national education and testing standards and result in Texas losing its autonomy in educating children.”

“Here in Texas, we don’t have broad consensus on every issue facing our school system,” Perry said. “We do agree we’d rather work those differences out in Texas with solutions that work for Texans instead of accepting a top down mandate from some distant bureaucrats.”

The Texas Department of Education is performing well. It has improved standardized test scores and reduced the dropout rate. Texas has also been recognized as one of four states that has significantly improved math scores. While “Race to the Top” doesn’t give the federal government control of the education system it does give it leverage as it pushes for education reform.

“Texas is on the right path toward improved education, and we would be foolish and irresponsible to place our children’s future in the hands of unelected bureaucrats and special interest groups thousands of miles away in Washington, virtually eliminating parents’ participation in their children’s education,” Gov. Perry said. “If Washington were truly concerned about funding education with solutions that match local challenges, they would make the money available to states with no strings attached.”

“I wholeheartedly support the governor’s decision,” Texas Education Commissioner Robert Scott said. “This one-time grant program would result in mandates for districts that would last for decades.”

“Texas has been working to implement research-based education reforms for years, culminating with great solutions for Texas children, and we should qualify for Race to the Top funding based on what we have already accomplished,” Rep. Rob Eissler, Public Education Committee chairman, said. “Instead, Texas will be penalized in its Race to the Top application for not complying with the federal government’s concepts about what is best for the children of Texas. In short, the two things I worry about in education are fads and feds, and this combines both.”

From the Governor’s website:

“Developing Texas’ workforce is imperative to maintaining our position as a national leader in job creation and our future prosperity. Texas was recently praised in Education Week magazine for its adoption of college- and career-ready standards, and for holding schools accountable for ensuring students are college-ready. Additionally, the governor recently announced a $160 million initiative to expand the number and scope of Texas Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (T-STEM) academies, an initiative he established in 2005, as well as fund STEM scholarships. Building on successful initiatives like T-STEM academies helps ensure future generations of Texans have the educational foundation necessary to compete and excel in the increasingly competitive global economy.”

America, this how all states should be run – with local consensus, with local resources and by the its’ citizens. Hooray for Gov. Perry and his team. This is an example of real leadership by a governor and independence by its’ citizens. This is the reason that Texas remains a solvent and independent state. This is despite the fact that overall taxes are reasonable and there is no individual state income tax. How many Governor’s are turning down federal money these days regardless of the length of the strings? Maybe instead of trying to have America emulate California and New York, we would choose to model ourselves after Texas!

Wake up America, socialistic nanny states don’t work! History is littered with them. Stand up for America, Stand up for freedom, Stand up for your state!

Restore the Republic, Reject Socialism!

“Education should be left to the states and should not be a top-down but a bottom-up process. Texas has an open, collaborative process including public hearings and input. The Lone Star State has invested considerable time and millions of dollars into curriculum development and has set some rigorous standards to which we are committed. This is another federal government bait and switch, and states that buy in will end up footing the bill.”
-Peggy Venable, Texas director, Americans for Prosperity

“While TAB believes that maintaining a strong and competitive workforce through education is a high priority for the state, we support the governor’s decision to keep decisions about our public education system at the state level. Gov. Perry is right to be concerned about mandates coming from the federal government that are tied to this relatively small amount of funding, which will commit the state to increased costs in the future.”

Obama Signs Executive Order Establishing Council of Governors

He’s at it again! The President has signed another executive order, this time creating a Council of Governors  to provide input on “homeland defense and civil support challenges facing our Nation today and in the future.”  The President will select 10 Governors to serve on the council and help with the “synchronization and integration of State and Federal military activities in the United States”. This executive order also is an attack on Posse Comitatus, a 1878 law bans military involvement in domestic police actions.

This is just another action designed  to continue to merge state and federal power. It also opens the door for more military involvement in domestic affairs and has sparked concern that the groundwork is being laid for a “national civilian security force”. Others fear that this is a step in undermining the 10th Amendment by eliminating more of the independent authority and the sovereignty of the States.

President Obama Signs Executive Order Establishing Council of Governors

Executive Order will Strengthen Further Partnership Between the Federal and State and Local Governments to Better Protect Our Nation

The President today signed an Executive Order(see below) establishing a Council of Governors to strengthen further the partnership between the Federal Government and State Governments to protect our Nation against all types of hazards. When appointed, the Council will be reviewing such matters as involving the National Guard of the various States; homeland defense; civil support; synchronization and integration of State and Federal military activities in the United States; and other matters of mutual interest pertaining to National Guard, homeland defense, and civil support activities.

The bipartisan Council will be composed of ten State Governors who will be selected by the President to serve two year terms. In selecting the Governors to the Council, the White House will solicit input from Governors and Governors’ associations. Once chosen, the Council will have no more than five members from the same party and represent the Nation as a whole.

Federal members of the Council include the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of Homeland Security, the Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism, the Assistant to the President for Intergovernmental Affairs and Public Engagement, the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense and Americas’ Security Affairs, the U.S. Northern Command Commander, the Commandant of the Coast Guard, and the Chief of the National Guard Bureau. The Secretary of Defense will designate an Executive Director for the Council.

The Council of Governors will provide an invaluable Senior Administration forum for exchanging views with State and local officials on strengthening our National resilience and the homeland defense and civil support challenges facing our Nation today and in the future.

The formation of the Council of Governors was required by the Fiscal Year 2008 National Defense Authorization Act which stated, “The President shall establish a bipartisan Council of Governors to advise the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of Homeland Security, and the White House Homeland Security Council on matters related to the National Guard and civil support missions.” (NDAA FY2008, Sec 1822)

Maybe this isn’t what it looks like but it does not look good or necessary… unless they are expecting some sort of problem. Either way Americans need to speak out against the ongoing assault on states’ rights and a rapidly expanding national government that is gobbling up all the power it can get its’ hands on.

Wake up America! We are running out of time. Let’s take our country back.

The Next 5 Things: #1 – Immigration Reform

Part 1 of a 5 part series:

As the attack on America continues the far left knows they are guaranteed only another 10 months of a controlling majority in both houses of Congress so they don’t have time to waste. They are going straight to the Cloward/Piven playbook and plan to “overwhelm the system.”

Besides the things that are already underway such as health care reform and cap & trade, there is much more in store. We begin with the first of five new agenda items for the administration and the “progressives” or socialists as I like to call them: Immigration Reform.

From the website USAmnesty.org

“The proposed immigration amnesty would benefit the 12 to 20 million undocumented aliens (illegal immigrants) currently living in the United States. An amnesty for illegal aliens forgives their acts of illegal immigration and implicitly forgives other related illegal acts such as driving and working with false documents. The result of an amnesty is that large numbers of foreigners who illegally gained entry into the United States are rewarded with legal status (Green Card) for breaking immigration laws.

The United States has granted amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants through different amnesty and laws. Before the first amnesty in 1986, amnesty was only given on a case by cases basis. Amnesty was never given to a large group of individuals. The first (and supposedly one-time only) amnesty in 1986 gave about 2.8 million illegal immigrations the opportunity to change their status through the Immigration and Reform Control Act (IRCA).”

“We are not going to ship back 12 million people, we’re not going to do it as a practical matter. We would have to take all our law enforcement that we have available and we would have to use it and put people on buses, and rip families apart, and that’s not who we are, that’s not what America is about. So what I’ve proposed… is you say we’re going to bring these folks out of the shadows. We’re going to make them pay a fine, they are going to have to learn English, they are going to have to go to the back of the line…but they will have a pathway to citizenship over the course of 10 years.” – President Barack Obama

According to his Organizing for America website:

“Barack Obama has played a leading role in crafting comprehensive immigration reform. Obama believes the immigration issue has been exploited by politicians to divide the nation rather than find real solutions. This divisiveness has allowed the illegal immigration problem to worsen, with borders that are less secure than ever and an economy that depends on millions of workers living in the shadows.”

The President is supported by groups such as The Immigrant’s List, from their website:

Immigrants’ List is a Political Action Committee (PAC) dedicated to electing members of Congress who support common-sense immigration reform. Our members believe in a fair and just immigration system that unites families, promotes fair employment practices, recognizes the value of immigrants to important sectors of our economy, and restores American’s status as a welcoming country for those who seek freedom from persecution and a better way of life.

So what will the administration and the Democrats propose? Here is what we know so far:

Create Secure Borders – Obama and the liberals say they want to preserve the integrity of our borders. They support additional personnel, infrastructure and technology on the border and at our ports of entry.

Improve Our Immigration System – Obama and the liberals say they want to fix the dysfunctional immigration bureaucracy and increase the number of immigrants who are allowed in each year to keep families together and meet the demand for jobs that employers cannot fill.

Remove Incentives to Enter Illegally – Obama and the liberals say they will remove incentives to enter the country illegally by cracking down on employers who hire undocumented immigrants.

Bring People Out of the Shadows – Obama and the liberals say they support a system that allows undocumented immigrants who are in good standing to pay a fine, learn English, and to gain the opportunity to become citizens.

Work with Mexico – Obama and the liberals say they believe we need to do more to promote economic development in Mexico to decrease illegal immigration.

This doesn’t sound too bad, right? Now look closer and think about what this means.

First, it is worth pointing out that we already have laws and policies under which all of these people could have applied to enter our country legally. It was a choice that they made to enter illegally and there should be a consequence for breaking the law.

That said, here are a few other points to consider.

I think everyone agrees that we need better border security for reasons that go way beyond illegal workers sneaking in to get a job. However, we can create secure borders without spending a fortune by properly enforcing our existing laws and making better use of our national guard by having them protect the homeland rather than fight in foreign wars.

With our current economic and unemployment crisis, now is not the time to bring more job seekers into the country. As for separating families, if you are here legally this isn’t a problem. If you aren’t, then you should be deported. If you had children while you were here illegally, your children should not automatically be granted citizenship. The current system is not perfect but probably only dysfunctional if you refuse to play by the rules.

As for bringing people out of the shadows – this needs to happen but not with the end game being amnesty but rather securing our country. How can a system work that allows undocumented immigrants to pay a fine, learn English, and to gain the opportunity to become citizens work? It seems flawed when the those for whom the system was designed to create opportunities are here under false pretenses to start with. Do we want to invite law breakers to become citizens?

Last but not least, we have spread ourselves so thin around the world that we can’t take care of our own citizens – I ask you, is it really our job to fix Mexico? And… it doesn’t end there. Once these rules are in place it won’t apply to just those from Mexico, it will apply to all illegal aliens.

Of course, if you oppose their agenda you will be branded a racist or a right wing extremist. Furthermore, this will provide another distraction and polarizing issue as we head into the midterm elections. We can not afford another 12 million dependents for our social programs, welfare or health care system. Citizenship for foreigners is a privilege to be earned. I say this because with citizenship comes rights and these sacred rights should only go to those who have committed to citizenship and loyalty to America, not just someone who needs a job, that is what work permits are for.

Remember the guy who is running the show was a community organizer and a student of Cloward/Piven and Alinsky. Here are a few of the tactics which are being employed:

“Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon… Keep the pressure on… The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself… The major premise for tactics is the development of operations that will maintain a constant pressure upon the opposition… Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.”

Wake up, America! Restore the Republic, Reject Socialism!

“Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave.” – Barbara Jordan

The Democrat’s next present to America – Universal Voter Registration

In the very near future, Sen. Chuck Schumer, (D) NY and Rep. Barney Frank, (D) MA are planning to introduce legislation to begin universal voter registration. Their proposal would require automatic registration of all potential voters from government lists such as welfare rolls, unemployment rolls, property tax lists, military records, driver’s license list and even criminal records – basically any list kept by the government or public record would be fair game for inclusion. If you show up in a public file and are of voting age you will be registered whether you request it or not. Another important aspect is that state laws on elections would be overridden by a federal mandate, potentially giving the feds the power to meddle in all state election outcomes.

This is a recipe for all kinds of potential new voter fraud. To start with no matter what they claim, the rule changes will make it possible for illegal aliens to register to vote. Many illegal aliens have driver’s licenses and many others get government benefits. Therefore, they will be included in the lists which will be the source for the voter rolls. It also creates the possibility for people to be registered multiple times because people’s names and other identification information are frequently recorded differently on different lists. The legislation is also expected to give felons the right to vote.

So why is this going to suddenly be a priority piece of legislation for the Democrats? Have you seen the polls lately? With ACORN in trouble for a variety of reasons the Democrat’s “get out the vote machine” may not be available for the critical 2010 election. This legislation may be their best shot at hanging on by introducing a large new voter base that they can manipulate. Maybe the Democrats are not as self destructive as we think – maybe they have a plan after all.

Watch these videos they explain a lot:

Wake up America! The American way of life is under full scale attack! We must fight back. We can not allow the left to take control of the election process. Voting is a right – of citizens, making both a duty and a privilege! It should be protect by the government for only those whom are entitled to it. Since voting is such a powerful right all citizens should be willing to make the extra effort required to register and prove their citizenship to exercise this right, it is also their duty to help protect the system. If voting is important to you – you will find the time to follow the registration process. Given all the attempted fraud in recent elections we should tighten not loosen the registration system, after all shouldn’t mericans decide the course of the country?

UN maneuvers to create “Global Gun Control”

In October unbeknownst to most of us, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced the Obama administration would reverse the Bush administration’s opposition to the UN’s proposed International Small Arms Treaty. This will clear the way for the treaty to reach a vote by the U.N. General Assembly. Seven countries, led by the British, are trying to restart U.N. efforts to restrict imports and exports of small arms. The goal is to “regulate the global arms trade” and “prevent the illegal transfer of guns.”

John Duncan, Britain’s ambassador for multilateral arms control and disarmament, describes the UN’s disarmament committee as launching point for a global treaty. The British believe their very stringent gun laws are the right direction for all countries. Now they intend to use the United Nations to bring their gun control model to the United States.

The irony of this effort is that since virtually banning guns in 1997, the UK has watched violent crime skyrocket by as much as 77% in some studies. The British Mail Online reports, “In the decade following [the election of the Labor Party] in 1997, the number of recorded violent attacks soared by 77 percent to 1.158 million – more than two every minute.” As a result the U.K. now has the highest violent crime rate in the European Union.

So what could this treaty require of its’ signatories, here is a quick overview according to The National Association For Gun Rights:

If passed by the UN and ratified by the U.S. Senate, the UN “Small Arms Treaty” would almost certainly FORCE national governments to:

  • Enact tougher licensing requirements, making law-abiding citizens cut through even more bureaucratic red tape just to own a firearm legally;
  • CONFISCATE and DESTROY ALL “unauthorized” civilian firearms (all firearms owned by the government are excluded, of course);
  • BAN the trade, sale and private ownership of ALL semi-automatic weapons;
  • Create an INTERNATIONAL gun registry, setting the stage for full-scale gun CONFISCATION.

Disguised as legislation to help in the fight against “terrorism,” “insurgency” and “international crime syndicates,” the UN Small Arms Treaty is nothing more than a massive, GLOBAL gun control scheme. To the petty dictators and one-worlders who control the UN, the U.S. isn’t a “shining city on a hill” — it’s an affront to their grand totalitarian designs for the globe. These anti-gun globalists know that so long as Americans remain free to make our own decisions without being bossed around by big government bureaucrats, they’ll NEVER be able to seize the worldwide oppressive power they crave.  Ultimately, the UN’s Small Arms Treaty is designed to register, ban and CONFISCATE firearms owned by private citizens like YOU.” So Patriots, here is yet another plan designed to usurp your rights which we need to defeat in 2010.

The gun-grabbers in the Obama administration and at the U.N. do not want us to have time to react and mobilize gun owners to defeat this radical treaty which if ratified steps on our 2nd Amendment rights. They (the UN) have been unsuccessfully trying to ram the “Treaty on Small Arms” down our throats since the mid-1990s. But this time they have an administration that appears willing to play along. The risk is high and the stakes are higher!

Wake up, America! Attempts to thwart our freedoms should be no surprise the anti-gun attitude of the current administration. We must turn the heat up on the U.S. Senate now before it’s too late! It takes 67 Senators to vote to ratify a treaty. Every freedom loving citizen needs to contact their Senator and tell them to vote against any attempt to ratify this treaty. This is just another attempt to give the U.N. jurisdiction over U.S. policy. On the heels of Obama’s recent Executive Order to provide Interpol with diplomatic level immunity from U.S. law and Constitutional behavior this is another slap in the face to our sovereignty.

Restore the Republic, Reject Global Governance!

“…to disarm the people is the best and most effective way to enslave them…” – George Mason

“The Constitution of most of our states (and of the United States) assert that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed and that they are entitled to freedom of person, freedom of religion, freedom of property, and freedom of press.” – Thomas Jefferson

Will 2010 be the dawning of Socialism in America?

In 1948 while campaigning for president, Norman Thomas of the Socialist Party of America said “The American people will never knowingly adopt Socialism. But under the name of ‘liberalism’ they will adopt every fragment of the Socialist program, until one day America will be a Socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.”

In November of 2008, America elected Barack Obama as its’ 44th President. Since his election President Obama has repeatedly promised to “fundamentally transform America”. The question is – into what?

Will 2010 be the dawn of Socialism in America? Will we be “transformed” from a free country where individuals can write their own ticket through hard work and entrepreneurialism to a “big brother nanny state”? American leadership was built through capitalism which rewards leadership, hard work, innovation and risk taking. A government run economy is incapable of fostering this type of environment.

There are red flags everywhere. Americans should fear the fact that the government is suddenly buying into failing businesses with money they don’t even have. They are printing money, loaning it to themselves and using it to buy failing businesses. You don’t have to have a degree in economics to figure out this is flawed thinking. Look further and it gets worse; the “businesses” they currently run are a wreck – the USPS (lost over a billion in 2009), Freddie Mac, Fannie Mac, Medicare and Social Security (all are insolvent). Plus there is the disastrous first rescue bill and the fact that nobody can tell us where the money really went. Where are all the shovel ready, job creating projects? Turns out politicians are more interested in votes than results.

So what has happened to create this possibility? In 2009 we saw the single largest expansion of the federal government in American history. Worse yet, this expansion was not single pronged. There was expansion on multiple fronts. Here are some examples:

1. The government bailed out and took over many financial institutions. Shortly after that the Treasury secured unprecedented new powers from Congress to “protect the national economy from companies whose collapse could jeopardize it.” Now until the T.A.R.P. funds are paid back many institutions find themselves at the mercy of government regulators and the Treasury Dept. Included in their new powers are the power to seize control of institutions, set executive compensation, take over their bad loans, and other illiquid assets and sell good ones to competitors. What is worse is that many of these powers extend to companies that may get in trouble in the future or companies that in the government’s opinion could weaken the U.S. economy based on their fiscal soundness.

2. The government has intervened in the economy in ways never before seen. The massive stimulus bill was supposed to jump start job creation and the credit markets, neither has happened. However the government is creating jobs at a record pace. This is not a long term solution because the government consumes wealth – it does not create it. The more government jobs that are created the more tax revenue is needed to fund them. Also there have been dumb programs such as “Cash for Clunkers” and “Cash for Caulkers” that provide no real sustainable economic recovery but create “good will giveaways” to build loyalty among the democrat faithful.

“A government which robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul.” George Bernard Shaw

3. The government has taken over both Chrysler and GM, along the way firing key executives and replacing them with government pawns. The automotive takeover has been a windfall for their union supporters in terms of both money and power.

4. The foreign policy and approach to national security of this administration have weakened our homeland defense as well as our international stature. Obama does not subscribe to the idea of “American exceptionalism.” Given the opportunity, he would willing sign on to all types international and U.N. treaties that will erode U.S sovereignty.

5. This administration has an unprecedented number of “czars” and advisors each assigned to work on specific areas of “transformation”. As White House chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel likes to say’ “Never let a crisis go to waste.” This administration is using legislation, regulation and manipulation to shape their transformational policies. For example the declaration of “greenhouse gases” as harmful to humans is regulation designed to manipulate the Congress into action on climate change legislation. This group of czars and advisors is made up of many scary left wing radicals such as John Holdren, Cass Sunstein, Kevin Jennings, Ron Bloom, Carol Browner, Mark Lloyd, Cameron Davis, Daniel Fried, Joshua DuBois and David J. Hayes. If you do not know who these people are you owe it to yourself to research them. They are advising your president.

6. The policy agenda of the Obama administration is rooted in social programs that expand the government and its’ control. This has fueled out of control spending. We have tripled the debt in Obama’s first year. Health care reform would give the government the opportunity to control 17% of the U.S. economy. New climate change legislation will give them more control of energy and industry. Net Neutrality and a revived version of the Fairness Doctrine will give them greater control of the internet and the airwaves. Programs such as the Wildlands Network or the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force are designed to give the federal government greater control of land/water resources and their uses. All of this while pushing the country to edge of bankruptcy.

“The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.” Thomas Jefferson

So to summarize, the current administration plans to “fundamentally transform America”. They have an ambitious agenda and they are moving at warp speed to get this accomplished while they control the both houses of Congress. 2010 will give us a mid term election to change the Congress but we have to get there without allowing them to pass more of their agenda items. The health care reform debate is solid evidence this is not about us or what we want. Even though there is clear public sentiment against this bill the administration is willing to try to jam it down our throats at any cost.

The free markets have been working for years. Companies rise and fall. Some declare bankruptcy and find their way back (see most of the airline industry) others don‘t. Why is this time any different? The only thing that has caused this time to be different is more government involvement and intervention! Involvement with Freddie/Fannie to push home ownership to those who really couldn’t afford it. Intervention over and over by the Fed manipulating interest rates to avoid allowing the bubble to burst which helped fuel credit spending and create false prosperity. Most advocates of free market economics/capitalism believe that this continuous manipulation and intervention by the government deepened the downturn in our economy. We can not spend our way out of this.

Here is what the President and most of the Congress doesn’t seem to get — they live in America. We are not a socialist country. This country was built on a system of free market capitalism. The government should not be seizing companies and taking them over. The government does not have unlimited powers to control healthcare, energy, private property, etc. We have a constitution that was designed to protect us from an out of control federal government. We need to use it. It is the time for real change – it is time to take back the country from the politicians and return control to regular people with common sense.

“Follow the path of the unsafe, independent thinker. Expose your ideas to the dangers of controversy. Speak your mind and fear less the label of “crackpot” than the stigma of conformity. And on issues that seem important to you, stand up and be counted at any cost.” – Thomas J. Watson

We need to get involved and send a message to our elected representatives that they work for us. If they won’t do the right things for our country they can and will be fired.

As Thomas Jefferson said, “A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor and bread it has earned — this is the sum of good government.”

So America, it is time to ask, how much control should the government have? This is not what the founding fathers had in mind. The government we see evolving before us is not part of any of the blue prints they left us!

“A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have.” Thomas Jefferson
