Today, U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi unveiled a new label for the “public option” referring to it instead as the “consumer option.” The public option, under which the government would offer health insurance is the most debated element of healthcare reform.
Pelosi explained the public option/consumer option this way; “We are not throwing them (consumers) to the wolves of the insurance industry without an option for them to choose which is what I would call not the public option, but the consumer option. And option for consumers to either choose to go to the private sector if they wish or have some leverage by saying I have another choice here. “It lowers costs. It lowers cost. Remember it lowers cost. That’s very important, by tens of billions of dollars, the consumer option lowers cost to the budget and to the taxpayer. It keeps the insurance companies honest by increasing competition ….”
Pelosi claims the “consumer option” conveys a more accurate impression than “public option.”
I can only conclude that Pelosi thinks we are all idiots and that her feeble attempt at rebranding will trick us into believing that Congress is listenining to us.
Couple this with the shenanigans going on in the Senate under Harry Reid’s direction and you really do have to wonder if they respect or care about the voters and their opinions at all. See below:
From The Huffington Post:
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) announced Monday that the bill he will bring to the Senate floor will include a public health insurance option that individual states could decline to participate in.
“I’ve concluded –with the support of the White House, Senators Dodd and Baucus — that the best way to move forward is to include a public option with the opt-out provision for states,” said Reid, referring to the Senate health and finance committee representatives, respectively, Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) and Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.). “The public option, with an opt-out, is the one that’s fair.”
The only victory in this fight is to send them back to the drawing board. Every version of the proposed bill is simply a “trojan horse” for what they really want. These bills are all designed to evolve through modifications and tinkering to become the bill that Obama and the Democrats want. Remember what Obama has said it may take 10 or 15 years but single payer is what we really want. Also remember Romney care in Massachusetts, it is a disaster. Romney claims that the bill he signed is no longer reflected in the current system and the democrats in the state house are to blame. Either way it proves if they can get their foot in the door all bets are off.
So in the end a pig with lipstick is still a pig!
